Close Protection Operatives often called Bodyguards need to deal with high pressure and sometimes dangerous situations, which requires in-depth knowledge and training. The demands of the job dictate that close protection training covers an extremely broad range of skills.
The Private Security Industry Authority (SIA) Act 2001 requires all individuals wishing to work in the private security industry in the UK, to hold an SIA Close Protection Licence. After attending and completing the Close Protection course, most students then apply for their SIA licence. On receipt of this licence they can then start applying for Close Protection roles in either Executive or Hostile Protection roles.
On taking the Executive route, a typical career path will be working as part of a team carrying out Residential security before moving onto the client’s personal protection detail. Once experienced is gained, operators can progress into Team deputy roles or travel abroad to be attached to a high net worth Protection Team. Hostile protection will see the operator normally off to Iraq working for a large security company in support of clients such as BP. These operators are normally on a rotation of 8 weeks on and 4 weeks off.
The Level 3 Certificate in Close Protection is the pinnacle of the Private Security Industry and once qualified and licenced, a whole new world of exciting career opportunities becomes available.
